Nigerian Communities Hit High Note in Hygiene and Sanitation

Working with communities in Nigeria to promote hygiene and slash disease rates

At Action Against Hunger, we’re all about promoting good nutrition and saving those who are severely malnourished. It’s well-known that having access to clean water and sanitation facilities, and knowing the ins and outs of good hygiene, are all important factors in fighting malnutrition. Without these things in place, disease can run rampant.

A Prevalent Problem

One of the most common triggers for the spreading of disease is the practice of going to the bathroom outdoors. (We technical people call this practice “Open Defecation,” or OD.) Where there’s OD, there’s disease. Waste gets into the water and the soil, and then the food, too.

OD can also cause communities to suffer a lot of economic loss, what with people suffering from illnesses and malnutrition and having high medical costs. It causes many adults to miss work and many kids to miss school. This is especially true for boys and girls under age five, whose immunity levels are lower.

Community-Led Solutions

So we’re working to completely eliminate OD. We’re using what we call the “Community-led Total Sanitation” approach—mobilizing communities to conduct their own appraisal and analysis of OD and take action to eradicate it. Here in Nigeria, my team and I trained 24 facilitators who have activated this approach in 30 communities so far.

To complement the community-led approach, we’re investing more than $200,000 USD to construct solar-powered boreholes, latrines, bathing shelters, underground reservoirs for health centers treating nutrition patients, and more. We’re also partnering with Nigeria’s Rural Water and Sanitation Agency to rehabilitate broken down water points, with the hope of ensuring rural communities have sustainable access to clean water.

In a village called Gabai, the responses were fantastic with about 90% of households willing to construct their own latrines within a month. We’re coordinating with the local works department to train community members on constructing pit latrines. And we’re helping about 500 households with special needs—especially the elderly or those with malnourished children—to pay for materials and construct their latrines.

I’m proud to work with Action Against Hunger, and to see how our efforts benefit so many people here in Nigeria and around the world every day. We promise to keep up our work to eliminate OD and make sure the people we help always have access to clean water, sanitation practices, and good hygiene.

Our teams work with local aid groups to bring emergency relief to thousands of Kenyans.

Since March, severe flooding caused by heavy rains has devastated the usually dry region of Tana River County, Kenya. The lives and livelihoods of more than 82,000 people hang in the balance, as they have lost their belongings, farmland, livestock, and access to clean water. An estimated 63,000 people are still displaced, unable to return home because their houses have been destroyed. In response to this disaster, Action Against Hunger has been hard at work providing emergency relief to thousands of people in desperate need of help.

The floods destroyed roads and bridges, making it extremely difficult for us to reach affected populations. Despite logistical challenges, our teams have worked tirelessly in cooperation with other humanitarian aid groups, the Kenyan Red Cross, and government agencies to bring much-needed emergency supplies such as soap, chlorine, and Jerry cans to affected communities.

The flood waters are starting to recede, so in addition to providing immediate emergency relief, we can now assess the overall situation and focus on long-term recovery efforts. Permanent water, sanitation, and hygiene projects are a particular priority, because water sources contaminated by flooding put already vulnerable populations at higher risk of water-borne illnesses such as diarrheal disease and cholera. Our teams are eager to resume work on a project supported by charity: water that will bring much-needed sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure to areas of Tana River County. In previous years, charity: water funded our development of sustainable water projects and sanitation, health and hygiene services to local communities. Their continued support will help us develop eighteen water projects and provide nearly 32,000 people in Tana River County with health and hygiene services by 2014.

Though the rains have stopped, our relief efforts have not. We will continue to provide critical aid to people in Kenya. Our goal in Tana River County—and in other areas around the world—is to not only provide essential relief in the aftermath of an emergency, but also to help communities affected by disaster find sustainable routes to recovery.

Partnership launches with NYC event May 20th -- text to give $5 through August 20th, National Lemonade Day

Ultimat Vodka and Action Against Hunger are teaming up to launch The Ultimat Lemon-AID Stand, our first summer-long anti-hunger fundraising campaign with a nationwide call-to-action. Beginning May 20^th at the Manhattan Cocktail Classic and continuing through National Lemonade Day August 20^th, the public is invited to text LEMONAID to 50555 to donate $5 to Action Against Hunger.

A small sum it seems, but we and our friends at Ultimat know what a difference just $5 can make.

Donations from the campaign will be used to support our programs, like our efforts to distribute Ready-To-Use Therapeutic Foods, or RUTFs. These nutrient-packed pastes, roughly the size of protein bars, are powerhouses in fighting childhood malnutrition; plus, they stand up to the elements in severe weather environments, have a long shelf-life, and don’t need to be mixed with water. Each packet costs roughly 33 cents, making the cost of 3 packets for a full day of treatment just $1. $5 translates to 5 days of treatment, getting a child well on his or her way to full recovery, which takes approximately 45 days and costs $45.

All will contend for the distinct honor of “Ultimat Lemon-Aid Master” as guests vote for their favorite cocktail. Supporters in and around NYC can purchase tickets for $25. Proceeds benefit Action Against Hunger.

Action Against Hunger loves moms. Our expert field staff understands that a mother’s health and well-being can affect the health of her children, and even her whole community. That’s why so many of our programs focus on treating, educating, and empowering mothers, so they can become healthy themselves and help their families thrive. In honor of Mother’s Day, we are sharing the story of two moms who benefitted from our efforts in Afghanistan.

Meet the Moms: Mahbooba and Zainab

Mahbooba has two young children. She lives with her husband and his mother, Zainab, in a village in Samangan Province, Afghanistan. Their family did not always get enough to eat, or get enough of the right kinds of food. They are not alone. In Afghanistan, more than half of the population suffers from chronic malnutrition because they don’t get enough variety in their diet, and a third of the population lacks regular and safe access to healthy food. Frequent natural disasters, low household incomes, and lack of education about proper nutrition and farming techniques all contribute to the country’s extremely high rates of malnutrition.

In this family’s village, and in nineteen others, we’ve implemented programs that promote home gardening and nutrition education. Mahbooba and other women in her village participated in our classes, where they learned proper nutrition and hygiene habits. Through these sessions, she learned the importance of breastfeeding, and that as a nursing mother, her own diet is critical to her children’s health.

I also learned that I must eat nutritious food to keep myself healthy while nursing. Since I started eating the vegetables that my husband harvests, I noticed that I am producing more milk than before.”

Home Gardening for Healthier Families

Our teams faced many challenges implementing a home gardening program in this area because so few people had previous gardening experience. Mahbooba’s husband Mohammed had never gardened before, but we helped him establish a garden plot and grow vegetables, which Mahbooba can now properly prepare because she attended our cooking classes. Zainab keeps the seeds from the vegetables they harvest so they can plant more next season. The family now has enough food that they can share some of their crops with neighbors.

“At first, I was hesitant to get involved in home gardening. I have never done it before and I thought vegetables would never survive in our climate. But I was wrong. When we started seeing the plants grow, I was really happy. I never imagined this abundance coming from our little home garden. I don’t worry about my family having food through the winter anymore. I am thankful to the people who made all this happen.”

“Nutrition for Growth”: A New Chapter for Nutrition Policy

Upcoming event creates key opportunity to grow and enhance world's nutrition programs

On June 8^th governments of developing and donor countries, foundations, private sector partners and nutrition organizations will come together in the UK to recommit to the most important investment we can make in the future: nutrition.

Nutrition programs – especially those that target women and children during the critical 1,000 day window from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday – are cost‐effective and offer some of the best returns of any investment in human development. By contrast, undernutrition can cost individuals up to 10 percent of their lifetime earnings and countries up to 11 percent of their annual GDP in lost productivity.

In preparation for the June 8^th Nutrition for Growth event, we at Action Against Hunger worked with other nutrition organizations to determine what the U.S. could and should commit to for the event. The U.S .government has shown leadership on food security issues through USAID’s Feed the Future initiative, former Secretary Clinton’s commitments to the 1,000 day window for good nutrition, the Child Survival Call to Action and other activities and initiatives. But the U.S. also has an important role to play in sustaining international support for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement and supporting developing countries that are investing in improving nutrition.

The U.S. should commit a total of $450 million each year from 2014 to 2016 to nutrition interventions, such as promoting breastfeeding and hand washing, providing key micronutrient supplements and treating cases of severe acute malnutrition.

On April 26th a coalition of nutrition organizations met with senior Obama administration officials to emphasize the importance of nutrition investments and strong nutrition policy. We delivered a letter signed by our CEOs outlining policies, explained below, that would help us meet global nutrition goals.

What the U.S. government can do

We think the U.S. should commit a total of $450 million each year from 2014 to 2016 to nutrition interventions, such as promoting breastfeeding and hand washing, providing key micronutrient supplements and treating cases of severe acute malnutrition. This level of commitment would represent 10 percent of the estimated global cost of growing programs to promote good nutrition in the countries with the highest burden of undernutrition.

We would also like to see the country strengthen its leadership on nutrition by developing a government-wide strategy to improve global nutrition. The U.S.’s food security and health interventions could be even more effective if they were delivered in a way that routinely took into account the ways in which disease, hygiene, and food insecurity contribute to undernutrition and targeted the populations most at risk of undernutrition—pregnant women and young children.

Since different government agencies are responsible for parts of the U.S.’s health, food security, livelihoods, water, sanitation, and hygiene efforts, we recommend establishing a high-level nutrition focal point who would have the authority and responsibility to measure and maximize these programs’ nutritional impacts. Establishing nutrition point people within each of the relevant offices and hiring more full-time nutrition staff in overseas offices of key countries to coordinate efforts would strengthen the food security and water, sanitation and hygiene programs’ positive impact on nutrition.

Across different programs and government agencies, progress is measured towards various objectives, which do not always show how well they are addressing nutritional needs. A good first step for the U.S. government would be to determine which programs have a nutritional impact and then make sure that nutrition measurements are part of the evaluations of these programs, so that we can see how U.S. programs contribute to the global nutrition goals set by the World Health Assembly in 2012.

With focused effort by governments, organizations working in nutrition, and other partners, we think we can meet these ambitious goals.

An App to Fight Hunger: How’s it Work?

With the Give Your Calories app, you simply take a photo of a food product or scan its barcode, and the app automatically calculates and converts those calories into donations: $1 for items that contain fewer than 200 calories, $2 for items containing 200-300 calories, and a $5 donation for items that contain 300-400 calories. For every additional 100 calories an extra $1 is added. For example, a 12 ounce can of Coca-cola containing 139 calories equates to a $1 donation while a beef taco that contains 221 calories equates to a $2 donation.

No Hospitals to Help Victims of Violence In Central African Republic

Our teams race to help vulnerable communities after recurring violence in the Central African Republic.

Last weekend, violent clashes once again shook the Central African Republic. In the capital, Bangui, and in the region of Bossangoa, the population waits for stability and emergency aid. Bossangoa is now a ghost town: half of its inhabitants have fled, fearing for their safety, and are living in unsafe makeshift camps. The area has been completely looted, including the therapeutic nutrition center where Action Against Hunger teams had been treating severely malnourished children. Even in the face of such precarious conditions, our teams are racing to evaluate the situation and resume relief efforts as quickly as possible.

Hospitals Looted and Shut Down

In Bossangoa, the health system is in a catastrophic state. The public hospital was closed after being looted, and only two private clinics can still support patients. But the clinics’ supply of medicine and other essential items are alarmingly low, so they are struggling to support the volume of patients suffering from injuries, waterborne diseases, and psychological trauma.

The therapeutic nutrition center where we were treating 35 children for severe acute malnutrition has been looted of medicine, mosquito nets, a generator for its water source, and other essential items. The children we were treating fled with their families, but their health and safety remain critical, especially as the lean season approaches. Usually during the lean season, we see a spike in cases of malnutrition and treat up to 100 children, but it is uncertain how many we will be able to help in the wake of recent events.

Food Reserves Plummet as Prices Rise

With the onset of the lean season just weeks away, this already critical situation could worsen dramatically. Food reserves are running low, and area markets provide a limited selection at much higher prices, so many families cannot afford to buy food. Growing food is also becoming a less viable option, as many people have had to sell or consume the seeds they usually reserve for planting in order to get by. These conditions combined put more and more people in the Central African Republic at risk for malnutrition, so it is crucial that we are able to resume relief efforts efficiently and effectively.

While the country slowly becomes more secure, we are working to restore and protect people’s access to health facilities and food provisions. When Food Prices Spike: Restoring Normalcy in the Central African Republic

Our teams manage and prevent malnutrition in the Central African Republic by improving food access

After a coup last month, the Central African Republic is still experiencing violence, and food prices, which are typically unstable, have been made more volatile by recent events. The recent upheaval has not helped the high rates of malnutrition and food insecurity typically found in the Central African Republic. So in addition to responding to immediate needs after the violence, Action Against Hunger continues to work to provide long-term solutions for communities faced with chronic hunger and seasonal malnutrition.

Creating a Food Secure Future

Our teams work to manage and prevent malnutrition through various means. We help families start their own home gardens, giving people who previously didn’t have access to fresh food the opportunity to grow their own. We educate and assist farmers in producing crops that are more diverse, nutrient-rich and plentiful so they can have a more balanced diet as well as more crops left over to sell. We also conduct informational sessions for mothers to teach the importance of breastfeeding and proper nutrition for their young children. All of these initiatives aim to create sustainable solutions to hunger in the communities we serve.

Immediate Help in the Lean Season

It is particularly important that we continue our lifesaving nutrition and food security programs in the coming months. Before the next harvest in July, many families will experience a “hunger gap,” which means their food intake will be severely limited—sometimes to just one meal a day. But with the recent upheaval ahead of the lean season making many families’ situations more unstable, our work is even more important.

In response, we’re racing to help people through the lean months of May and June through a range of programs, like providing families with provisions of staple foods like rice and beans that help shield families from greater exposure to severe malnutrition.

And these initiatives have already proven successful: we have seen a significant jump in the number of breastfeeding mothers, children who are eating three meals a day, and families that are better educated about nutrition. We will continue to help restore stability and provide support for the people of the Central African Republic.
